As you will recall, Bishop’s Committee members serve three-year terms. We have nine voting members, and each January three members roll off and three new members roll on. (Our treasurer does not vote, though she participates regularly in meetings, and does not serve a set term.) Above, beside each member’s name, I have included the dates of his or her term.
You will notice asterisks by Roberta Haas’ and Laura Lozano’s names. This is because this past year, two Bishop’s Committee members ended their terms early. (One went to seminary and the other needed to resign for personal reasons.) In order to maintain even cycles of three new BC members joining and three rolling off each January, Roberta and Laura are finishing those partially completed terms. I am grateful for their willingness to jump in.
I am excited for this group to begin their work together. We’ve a good mix of ages, men and women, newer folks and long-time members. In the weeks ahead, we’ll be re-evaluating BC job descriptions to make sure they are up to date with our current needs. We’ll also do some orientation work to make sure everyone has what they need to begin serving as ‘BC of the Day’ on Sundays and to take on subcommittee responsibilities. As a reminder, our three subcommittees are Finance & Administration, Facilities & Grounds, and Mission & Ministry. Every BC member is on one of these three teams.
I am grateful, too, for Krista Piferrer, Betsey Terrel, and Steve Kowalik, current BC members who are completing their terms and rolling off at the end of this month. Well done, good and faithful servants! I am particularly grateful to Krista, our outgoing Bishop’s Warden, who has been an outstanding and level-headed support to me during the many changes of Coronatide.
Finally, a note about how BC members are chosen. Our model in recent years is simple: I brainstorm potential names with current BC members, and then I extend invitations directly to potential new members. I look for folks who exhibit an active faith in Jesus Christ; who are clearly committed to the life and work of St. Liz through their time, talent, and treasure; and who have the ability and willingness to serve. The folks whose names are listed above are certainly not the only folks at St. Liz who fit this description. So, if you were hoping to be asked, I hope in the future you’ll let us know you’re looking for ways to get more involved.
You might recall that at the beginning of 2020, we had planned to shift this model to one in which new BC members would be elected by the congregation. As with so much else, this was sidelined by Coronatide. That idea is still on the table, however, and the question of whether and/or when to move to an election model will be part of the work the 2022 BC undertakes together. As always, I am happy to talk more if you have any questions.
